What is lawn scarification
Lawn scarification is the process that helps remove thatch and moss from the lawn. We do this using a professional grade mechanical scarification machine.
What is Thatch?
Thatch is an organic layer consisting of dead, dying and living stems, roots and leaves, in fact, all parts of the grass plant. A thick thatch layer will have a number of detrimental effects on any lawn. The surface will feel spongy and can stay wet for longer. It prevents the infiltration of water and therefore affects the drainage properties of the lawn.
Thatch also acts as a harbour for pests and diseases to develop and feed in. It promotes the ideal conditions for weed invasion, mosses and undesirable grass species. Thatch can also trap within it any nutrients applied to a lawn resulting in a very shallow root system. Shallow rooted grasses offer poor drought resistance, colour and density, and the plants ability to recover from wear will be drastically reduced.
Why should I scarify my lawn?
Moss and thatch make your lawn soft and spongy. Removing these layers will allow the soil to exchange gases and help promote a thick, lush grass surface that is easier to mow.
Regular lawn scarification will help to:
- Reduce the amount of moss in the turf surface
- Increase the density of some grasses
- Remove undesirable thatch layers
- Allow water, nutrients, and oxygen access to the soil layers resulting in a healthier more drought resistant turf surface
- Improve water drainage rates
- Create the correct conditions needed for the germination of newly sown seed
- Reduce water run-off from the turf surface
- Prevent the formation of algae
When is the best time of year for lawn scarification?
We recommend lawn scarification is performed yearly in either spring or autumn.
Why should I hire a professional to scarify my lawn?
Scarification can be performed at home using a garden rake, but this is a time-consuming and laborious process. At Premier Lawns we are happy to take on the hard work for you, we have the machinery to undertake the task and are fully trained and experienced.
Scarification is included in both our Standard and Premier treatment packages.

A boutique partnership in professional lawn care
Great lawns aren't created by chance, and they certainly aren't built on mass-market formulas. They're built in partnership.
We work in partnership with you. We handle the treatments and the complex science of soil health. You manage the mowing and keep things right between visits.
We intentionally limit our intake. It's the only way to give every lawn the attention this partnership takes.
You mow it, we grow it.
