What is Lawn Aeration?

Lawn aeration is the process of making holes in the surface of the lawn to allow carbon dioxide air out and fresh oxygen air into the soil.  At Premier Lawns we perform aeration with a mechanical aerator which will press steel tines into the lawn through to the root zone underneath, and we offer both hollow core and solid tine aeration (spiking).

Why should I aerate my lawn?

Lawn aeration will relieve compaction and increase air space helping to promote healthier growing conditions.  It is an essential part of any lawn care regime, but particularly on the clay soils in Belfast and the surrounding areas.  This is because clay is made of very fine particles and therefore is very prone to compaction and becoming waterlogged.  This prevents air, water, and nutrients from reaching the roots leading to shallow rooted grasses and reduced drought resistance.

Regular aeration of your lawn will:

  • Relieve soil compaction
  • Encourage new root growth
  • Increase rooting depth
  • Reduce the build-up of thatch beneath the surface
  • Improve filtration of water into the soil
  • Improve drainage
  • Stimulate microbial activity in the soil, which in turn will create a healthier environment for grass to grow.

When is the best time of year to aerate a lawn?

Lawn aeration can be performed almost all year round (soil and weather conditions permitting), with the exception of during very dry periods or when the ground is frozen.

Is spike or hollow core aeration better?

The best time to hollow core a lawn is in conjunction with scarification and lawn renovation work in Spring & Autumn.  Hollow tine aeration is very beneficial for lawns with a high amount of thatch and moss as it helps remove this from the lawn.

We recommend using the solid tine method in the winter and summer months.

Why should I hire a professional to aerate my lawn?

Machinery hire can be costly.  Aeration can be performed at home using a garden fork or spiked sandals, although this can be hard work and very time-consuming.  At Premier Lawns we are happy to undertake the hard work for you, we have the machinery to undertake the task and are fully trained and experienced.

Aeration is included in both our Standard and Premier treatment packages.

A boutique partnership in professional lawn care

Great lawns aren't created by chance, and they certainly aren't built on mass-market formulas. They're built in partnership.

We work in partnership with you. We handle the treatments and the complex science of soil health. You manage the mowing and keep things right between visits.

We intentionally limit our intake. It's the only way to give every lawn the attention this partnership takes.

You mow it, we grow it.

About us

Our customers say

Excellent service. Robbie is reliable, a gentleman, a tidy workman and does a wonderful job. Delighted to have found him. We thoroughly recommend him.

Andrew Gould

Robbie's service has been first class. Punctual and efficient, he arrives when he says he is going to arrive. Our lawn was scarified and then treated with weedkiller and fertiliser and it's never looked better. I wish we had started 10 years ago!
